How to Fix User Profile Service Failed Logon Error?

Have you ever stumbled into a dreading message “The User Profile Service Failed the Logon. User Profile cannot be loaded” while trying to log on to any of your frequently used user account? Well there are endless errors and issues that you may have to confront if you are using computers and laptops on a daily and heavy basis, and if you are confronting this kind of issue, then you have definitely come to the right spot to resolve your issue.

Sometimes, simply restarting your computer can resolve the issue without any further complex technical solution demand, but sometimes it doesn’t. and that’s where you have to use some tricks.

Part 1. Fix User Profile Service Failed Logon Error by Regedit

Step 1. For that, firstly turn on your computer in Safe mode. The solution here basically is about fixing the user account profile by modifying the registry. Now as modifying the registry keys incorrectly may pave way to fatal disaster to your system, thus you must first back up the entire registry before you set out with your venture, so that you can restore the files if anything goes wrong.

Step 2. Now once you have backed up the registries, press “Windows + R” key combination to open the “Run” command and type in “regedit” and hit ”Enter”.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Step 4. Next under this subkey, trace the folder that starts with S-1-5 preceded with a long number. You will get to see two folders named like that; choose the folder containing ProfileImagePath entry in the right side detail panel.

Step 5. Double click on it and you will get to behold the Value Data information with the name of the very user account that is failed to log on properly to know that you are on the right track.

Step 6. Now right click on the folder labeled without .bak extension and then rename by typing .ba at the end of it and then press “Enter” key. Again right click on the folder with .bak extension and rename to remove the .bak and press “Enter” key. Now rename the .ba extension folder with .bak again and press “Enter” key.

Now reboot your computer and check if you can now log on using the particular user profile account. If you have followed all the steps perfectly, then there will be no issue persisting anymore.

Part 2. Fix User Profile Service Failed Logon Error by Regedit

This method could be a bit complicated if you are not familiar with the registry key operations of your system, thus there is an alternative you can put to use by simply deleting the error SID and creating a new profile. Make sure to back up your registry before you head on with this method.

Step 1. Firstly click on “Start” button and then right-click on “Computer”. Click “Properties” and then “Change Settings”. A “System Properties” dialogue box would appear in which you have to click the “Advanced” tab.

Step 2. Now click on the “Settings” button under the “User Profile” section. Select your user profile that wish to delete and click “Delete” and then “Ok”.

Step 3. Now, click “Start” again and type in “regedit” in the search box and hit “Enter”. It will open up the Registry Editor. Navigate down to the registry sub key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList 

and right click on the SID that you want to delete and click “Delete” to remove it completely. When you have finished all the laborious tasks, restart your computer again and log on to your computer and create a new user profile.

This can be the only viable solution if the problem still persists even after modifying the registry sub keys as explained above. 

The two methods above can easily help fix User Profile Service Failed Logon error. You can also try out another solution in which you can create a whole new account and copy the data from the old user account to this new account. This will be a much easier approach than all the methods described below put together. Suppose you are still not able to log on to any of your user profile and the error is re-appearing even after creating a new profile account, go immediately to the nearest service center and ask for an expert advice. You can also submit your device in the hands of computer experts as they are better at handling these types of errors.
